John Gauden (1605-1662) was born at Mayland, Essex. He went to school in Bury St Edmunds, and entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1619 (B.A., 1623; M.A., 1626). In 1630 he became a tutor in Oxford, and that year joined Wadham College (B.D., 1635; D.D., 1641). Gauden was appointed vicar of Chippenham and chaplain to Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick, in 1640, and became dean of Bocking in 1641.
